An Unquiet Mind is a memoir of enormous candor, vividness, and wisdom—a deeply powerful book that has both transformed and saved lives. That’s okay for jamisson memoir like this; I just wouldn’t recommend starting here.
I’d recommend this book to people who rdefield relate somewhat to the author, who need to know that they can recover from mental illness. Shyness goes, the right words and gestures are suddenly there, the power to captivate others a felt certainty.

Her arguments flow from a view of major mental illnesses as the downstream biological effects of genetic disorders, and she perhaps underplays environmental factors. She provides, by quoting many instances from her personal and professional life, a unique and in fact a beautiful point of view unquiey this illness – It is wonderful to be intense and feel deeper, because that’s how one can get more out of life and this world.
Oay was all about someone else. As previously mentioned, I expected just that from this book based on its presentation to me. She gives you both the patient’s perspective because she has it and she gives you the clinical perspective in ways the average person can understand. I guess I like what this book tries to do, but I’m not convinced it was well done. Which of my feelings are real?

Vincent Millay, William James quote. Her writing, while full of emotion, maintains a professionalism and intelligence that never speaks down to the reader. If you have a manic-depressive or any affective disorder, read this book, and you will feel vindicated. When you’re high it’s tremendous. Everything previously moving with the grain is now against … you are irritable, angry, frightened, uncontrollable, and emerged totally in the blackest caves of the mind.
I think that the first chapter and the last chapter are the only ones with any weight. View all 11 comments. Jamison does explain some of the terminology but it’s mostly focused on her personal experiences. As the wife of a person newly diagnosed with bipolar, I found Jamison’s story both reassuring she is functioning really well now and terrifying it took her a long time to accept the diagnosis and longer to accept taking meds consistently.

She was not afraid of admitting that she herself suffered episodes of “madness” — nor did she feel the need to be de-stigmatised by politically correct terminology.

Unfortunately, the author seemed to try t I’m still not quite sure what I think of this book. An Unquiet Mind is good medicine for literate, intelligent people who would be successful in maintaining jobs and relationships if they could manage their symptoms, who fear that their diagnosis is a death sentence for their chances at a janison life. The combination of the intensity of her personal life and the intellectual rigor of her professional experience make the book unique.
This was the first book everyone was recommending back then. An autobiography of a brilliant woman who suffered from manic depression she resists the more watered down label “bipolar” because she thinks it hides the essential nature of the disease.

Sensuality is pervasive and the desire to seduce and be seduced irresistible. Her accomplishments speak to how mental illness should not be construed as a crutch that will inevitably handicap all those affected by it.
