I have recently been working with my Year 12 Drama class on Artaud, scouring numerous texts in order to understand his Theatre of Cruelty techniques in some depth. The Theatre of Cruelty can be seen as a break from traditional Western theatre and a means by which artists assault the senses of the audience, and allow them to feel the unexpressed emotions of the subconscious.
I certainly enjoy teaching Artaud in the senior high drama classroom and my students always find his concepts for the theatre engaging, yet challenging. Antonin Artaud was a member of the surrealist movement in Paris in the s, and was well known as an actor, playwright, and essayist of avant-garde theatre.
