The planters hated the merchants and the governor because they enforced and benefited from the exclusif, the French monopoly on trade. R James did an exceptional job of putting a lot things in context and revealing the things that shaped this country into what it is today. His socio-political analysis and artistic vision are in such concord that there is no trace of any divergence. I am not a major reader of history books but in reading blacck I learned so much.
