This simplistic account of the development of bushido is problematic, however, and relies on pre-war theories that conflated diverse historical periods and ideologies to provide legitimacy for the modern imperial state and nation. Oleg Benesch, “Inventing the Way of the Samurai” less. See 1 question about Bushido…. Lists with This Book. This book is not yet featured on Listopia. There are several reasons why I didn’t really like this book. First, it feels very dated. Nitobe often compares samurai to the knights of chivalry in a favorable light, which may have appealed to westerners when this was published, but really doesn’t appeal to the modern reader which has a less romantic understanding of medieval life.

When I read these comparisons, it brought up mostly negative images even though it was clear that the author meant it to be a positive image.

Second, Nitobe’s sourc There are several reasons why I didn’t really like this book. Second, Nitobe’s sources are a bit suspect. When citing Japanese sources, he often cites literary, legendary, or semi-historical examples. He never once cites any documentary evidence or any testimony from any living samurais. The feudal system was abolish only around 30 years before the publication of this book, so numerous living sources were available at that time.

The legendary sources that he cites are exceptional, not typical, which is why they have come down to us as legend. Creating a theory on how the typical samurai lived by citing exceptional sources is not convincing. Third, Nitobe’s expertise in not bushidl Japanese cultural studies, but in western literature and philosophy. This can be seen in his reliance on western sources to help explain his concept of samurai ethics.

Since more than rstnika of his references are western, it underscores the weakness of his Japanese sources. If you want to learn about pre-modern Japanese society and culture, or about the samurai themselves, there are other better researched sources.

I would advise you to give this one a pass. Got within 20 pages of the end and had to put it down when the author revealed his feudalistic attitudes toward women. Yes this was written over a century ago – but he had contemporaries that revealed much more about culture with clearer writing and fewer prejudices.

Ahora me parece absurdo lo serviles que eran. I’m done with it. Who knew it would talk me this long to finish it! I could not get through more than 50 percent of this book. Waste of 2 hours. I read this in order to give a ubshido on Nitobe as an “internationalist. It is, in short, a culturalist and ideological text that must be taken with the enormous grain of salt. Surely no one will read this to understand “the soul of Japan,” wha I read this in order to give a talk on Nitobe as an “internationalist.

Surely no one will read this to understand “the soul of Japan,” whatever that may be. This book was written inand it has to be one of the worst books on Bushido I have ever read. It reads more puh a Christian tract than a book about the samurai. The author spends far more time quoting Christian Bushidp and maxims then he does actually telling you anything useful about Bushido.

You will gain some knowledge about the philosophy of ubshido samurai by reading this, but sadly, it’s not enough to make the book worth while.
