I think you should tie this to honorable completion of military service. It paints a very bleak picture of society where one group of extremists pushes the other one and they end up in vicious circle of violence and retributions. The characters all started off pretty strong too, with compelling backstories and descriptions.
The seething, hating, whining socialist, who hates achievement, who loathes what she perceives to be unfair American hegemony, who considers herself entitled to others’ earnings, and ultimately understands that in order to save herself and her offspring, she must appeal to the very nation she hates – America.
