Joan D. Vinge is an American science fiction author. She is known for such works as her Hugo Cat. Psion (); Catspaw (); Dreamfall (). Cat’s paw is a phrase derived from La Fontaine’s fable, “The Monkey and the Cat” , referring to a person used unwittingly or unwillingly by another to accomplish the other’s own purpose. Cat’s knowledge of the underside of society gets him into places others couldn’t, and he meets a man who vknge mentally project into machines, a woman who dances with illusions, and an old friend from the mines. Thanks for telling us about the problem. I felt strange when I realized that; invisible. Unfortunately, the journey is short, because these characters appear only in Psion, Catspaw, Dreamfall, and the short story Psiren, found in the anthology Phoenix in the Ashes and the Kindle edition of Psion.

Sure, it seems a bit of a cliche novel. He gets caught every time he runs. Dec 28, Peggy Thomson rated it really liked it. Above average reading copy and a fine read. Even the sexual encounters are not there for the sake of titillation or overwrought catxpaw about power, loneliness, and fear. Vinge also makes the future world feel plausible–it’s in an indeterminate, far-future reality when humans have colonized the catsspaw and had time to build cities that crush their older cities, with historical districts and everything, and you feel the layers of time in everything.

But I loved the second and third vinfe dearly. Although he doesn’t really believe he could be anything special, Cat chooses to take part in the training, and is swiftly drawn into a world of interplanetary intrigue.

Used book in very good condition. What’s amazing about this book is how hilarious Cat sometimes is even though he’s kind of a screw-up and kind of a badass.
