It is a well researched and clearly written critique that also examines the lasting effect Said’s work has had on Muslim thinking and politics. Dec 27, Dirk G. Joe rated it it was ok Sep 19, Like so many, I was first introduced to the works of Edward Said in my first year of grad school in a course called “The History of Historical Writing”.

One thing I do appreciate is Ibn Warraq’s point of view as a non-Westerner, which should deflect the standard accusations of racism, colonialism, privilege, etc. These were fascinating and disturbing concepts that strongly challenged many of the conventional underpinnings of history that I had taken for granted.

His analysis of self-criticism is particularly important, because it shows how Western Civilization can learn from its mistakes and move forward, rather then be defined by them as Orientalism asserts.
