Today, the great progress that has been made in understanding mdchanics forces developed on a vehicle due to the fluid-flow over that vehicle and determining the resulting stresses and the changes in the shape of the vehicle in turn changing the forces acting on the vehicle made of advanced composites is based on knowledge of Continuum Mechanics.
The same concepts also help in understanding the blood-flow in flexible visco-elastic arteries. Batra is uniquely qualified on the subject, and he has written this book in a manner that will make it of interest to both a beginning graduate student as well as an expert in the field. Batra has gone beyond a simple cataloging of such topics as Cartesian tensors, kinematics and the strain tensor, the balance laws, and the stress tensor, etc.
He has taken pains to provide an extensive coverage of various constitutive laws beyond the usually covered Hookean solids or Newtonian fluids. As we develop materials for new generations of vehicles varying from a micro-UAV to an Airbus and from a The AIAA Education Book Series aims to cover a very broad range of topics in the general aerospace field, continjum basic theory, applications, and design.
The philosophy of the mechaanics is to develop textbooks that can be used in a university setting, instructional materials for continuing education and professional development courses, and also books that can serve as the basis for independent study. A serious attempt has been made to convey concepts through numerous example problems. The clntinuum included in the book is more than what can reasonably be covered in a week semester. Chapter one is very brief and is quite elementary; it does not require any class time.
Depending upon the background of students in the class, one may not spend too much time on the second chapter and encourage students to review it whenever needed. Nearly all of the material in chapters 3 and 4 ought to be covered. The instructor may decide to teach only a part of chapter 5 and spend sometime in covering the material included in chapters 6 through There are several books that cover more advanced material; one such book is The Nonlinear Field Theories of Mechanics by C.
Noll, Handbuch der Physik,Springer, The hope is that after studying material in this book, the reader will find it easier to master the Nonlinear Field Theories and also delve into the literature to learn more about the subject.
