I had read her other novel The Buddha in the Atticwhich follows a group of Japanese women immigrating to America, and it is also gorgeous and heartbreaking. The character I felt the most love for was the boy. What do the fragments of dialogue tell us about them? How does their new behavior correspond to popular stereotypes of Japanese Americans?
This is a difficult book to read, as well it should be, a book of loneliness, deep sadness and alienation during an episode of fairly recent history.

In what ways does this confession play on stereotypes about Japanese and Anglos? What does it give readers that a straightforward historical investigation cannot? Where are Peleliu and Saipan?
